Smooth Sailing this Columbus Day Weekend
There's an incredible feeling that comes over you when you leave work for a long weekend trip. We like to think of it as the call to freedom, at least for three to four days. But before you know it, it's over and you find yourself exhausted, broke and wondering where the time went … and why you thought it was okay to pack enough to dress a small village. Well in preparation for this Columbus Day weekend the iMag team got together to share five tips that will guarantee a great LONG weekend away.
1. Pack Lightly: Packing can be overwhelming, especially when you're doing it last minute. I went straight to our Style Guide host Noelle to find out the secret to packing smartly. She said, "When packing for a long weekend, people tend to over pack, under pack or pack all of the wrong things (one pair of underwear and ten hats). Planning outfits ahead of time can make your packing more efficient. Always remember a pair of jeans and something dressy just in case." If you're traveling for work check out Noelle's tips for business trip packing.
2. Rest Up Before the Trip: You need your beauty sleep leading up to your getaway. Otherwise you'll be even MORE exhausted (it is possible) when you return to work on Tuesday morning. Also consider rest time once you return. Plan your departure early enough so when you return home you have time to rest before work the following day.
3. Smart Snacks for the Road: Whether you're traveling on a bus, train or plane you'll be tempted to eat poorly and pay extra money at rest stops. Our resident nutritionista Colleen recommends packing 100 calorie snacks and bottles of water instead of opting for endless bags of chips filled with fat and sugary sodas. If you're flying you will absolutely want to check out what to eat and NOT eat on a plane. Plus, check out her video on eating well on business trips.
4. Buy a Map and Actually Study It: Forget Google mapping every turn. If you purchase a map you'll be able to quickly navigate your way through a new city or town. Even the most direction-challenged people will benefit from this tip.
5. Ask Locals for Recommendations: Any chance you get ask natives for tips on the best restaurant in town, or the not-so-touristy spots.
And if you're not off this Monday and dreading heading back to work, check out the career section and we’ll help you get through the day.
