Skip the Salon and Do Your Own Manicure

There's no excuse not to look your best. But let's face it, a trip to the salon takes time and money ... two things that are hard to come by these days. However, with a little time and some extra pampering, you can give yourself a long lasting salon quality manicure at home. Nail expert Jessica Vartoughian says all you need is a half hour or so and these simple steps:

Step 1: Remove all polish on your nails.

Step 2: Massage a cuticle oil like Phenomen Oil into the nails and cuticles and soak hands for 3-5 minutes.

Step 3: Shape the nails with a gentle emery board.  File in only one direction (do not "saw") toward the tip of your nail.

Step 4: Gently push back cuticles with a handkerchief or linen towel. Wash hands and make sure all the oil is removed.

Step 5: Apply 2 coats of your favorite base coat treatment for your specific nail type. Apply under and over the nail and seal the edges. Let dry for a few minutes.

Step 6: Apply 2 coats of your favorite nail polish color using the same application technique.  A few iMag favorites are Bachelorette Bash and Big Spender.

Step 7: Apply a fast-drying topcoat to finish your manicure

Jessica's Bonus Tips:

For long-lasting results, apply another coat of a clear topcoat (like Jessica's Brilliance topcoat) the day after your manicure for extra protection. Your manicure should last a week to 10 days.

Jessica says that the key for a beautiful looking manicure is application. You must make sure that you generously apply your polish and cover the nail and all the edges. Use 8-10 strokes, apply under the nail, over the nail to seal the edges. Your manicure will look rich and smooth. If you just apply 3 strokes of polish, you will not cover the nail properly and you will not get an even and smooth finish. Chances are it may chip off the next day. Also, give yourself a few extra minutes before applying the each coat of polish
