Welcome InYou can tell a lot about a designer by how he or she has put together their own home, and there is no exception with Boston-based interior designer, Erin Gates. Using a mix of bold and neutral colors, affordable and high end furniture, Gates gave iMag a tour of her eclectic Boston condo.
Painted in Benjamin Moore's Manchester Tan with White Dove trim, the foyer properly welcomes guests into the first floor condo. The focal point is the vintage chest Gates found at a flea market. She painted the exterior black and the interior turquoise, which pops from behind the glass doors. Above the chest hangs a picture collage, for which she used a series of white frames.

Mixing it UpA large space with ample natural light, the living room is a comfortable place to lounge. Staying true to her convention of mixing high and low pieces, Gates has assembled a living room from different price points. The couch is from Boston Interiors and the chairs are from Ikea, while the Crate & Barrel coffee table is made of reclaimed wood, and was more expensive.

Updating an AntiqueWhen Gates received this antique dining set from her husband's grandparents, she wasn't wild about its look, so she updated it. "I painted the chairs white and had the seats redone and now I love it," she says. An added bonus is its sentimental value: "I love that my husband grew up having breakfast as a little boy at that table."
The trim on the walls used to be dark wood, which she quickly painted white. "I'm a sucker for white trim," she says. She painted the walls Brown Horse, by Benjamin Moore. "Dark walls can create such a stunning backdrop for silver and colorful pieces," she says. -
Work in ColorGates' office is a truly a designer's work space. Painted in Benjamin Moore's Kelly Green, Gates uses her office (and every room in her house) as a place to test color. "I just love trying things out in my own space," she says. "My office was lavender for a long time and now it's green, so with the trends I like to get my hands dirty."

Kitchen SpaceA large space in the back of the condo, the kitchen was redone before Gates moved in. Gates kept the black and white theme consistent with the table and chairs, rug and patterned plates on the wall, but provided a pop of color with the orange table runner and berries.

Bedroom BlissThe light blue bedroom has a tranquil, yet sophisticated feel. Contributing to that is the chandelier, which Gates bought for $99. The two lamps on the nightstands were affordable finds from Home Goods. The art on the wall is framed vintage wallpaper.
